Groundbreaking at Pangalengan

Pangalengan, 5 October 2009: HFH Indonesia kicked off the Disaster Response Project to build 1,000 houses of the affected families in Pangalengan District, West Java Province by groundbreaking the first house on 5th October 2009. This is Habitat’s top agenda in celebrating the World Habitat Day in Indonesia. HFH Indonesia wished to start reaching the affected families promptly in rebuilding their home and their hope. Through this program, one core house with 18m2 will be provided and construction training and disaster mitigation will be trained to the community.

In Pangalengan district, more than 15,000 houses were destroyed, badly and lightly damaged, and 54 schools were damaged by the earthquake. More than 30,000 IDPs are living in tents. Tri Budiardjo, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Indonesia said “With enormous damages of housing in the area and with hot condition on the day and very cold at night due to mountain area, I wish that we support together the disaster affected families to go back to their home soon. With Habitat’s motto ‘building homes, building hopes’, we hope after their house is rebuilt, their hope is rebuilt, too”. Local government, Non – government Organization (NGO) partners, donors and other institutions joined HFH Indonesia at the groundbreaking event which officially announced by Bandung Head of District H. Obar Sobarna, S.IP.

The event is associated with World Habitat Day. In December 1985, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first Monday of October to be “World Habitat Day”. The day offers a chance to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic need everyone has for adequate shelter. World Habitat Day also serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. In both developed and developing countries, cities are increasingly feeling the effects of climate change, resource depletion, food insecurity, population growth and economic instability. These pose a significant challenge for the 21st century. This year’s World Habitat Day, which this year falls on 5th October, focuses on the need for better and smarter planning to cope with the demands of rapid urbanization.
