Habitat Yoygyakarta Community is Powered by Cotomu

To speed up debris cleaning and and to re-use materials for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Stage in Jogjakarta Disaster Response Project (JDRP),  JDRP team had an innovation of doing it.  CoToMu or Construction Tools Mobile Units were provided to the selected communities on needs basis for debris cleaning that will fasten the cleaning process and for reconstructing houses and other public facilities. Each unit consists of essential construction tools such as a concrete mixer, trolleys, steel cutter and drilling machine. Habitat lent the unit to the communities and after one community had utilized it, the unit would be rotated to other community.

Nur Alamsyah (32) from Wirokerten Village, Wirokerten sub-district, Bantul, Yogyakarta, is a participant of Habitat’s Construction Tools Mobile Unit (COTOMU) Program.  I think the COTOMU program is very useful for the community here. If we should buy or rent the tools, we couldn’t afford it. I also think that this program has more sustainable and long term output,” said Nur, who is also one of the village committee members.

In Wirokerten village, COTOMU was used to reconstruct the community’s houses and other public facilities such as bridge, main streets, and bicycle parking area. Up to June 2007, the program has served around 200 families in Wirokerten sub-district.
