“Mapalus”, a Self Help System for Manado Affiliate
Manado, 30 May 2007 – A fact shows that 48% out of 1.5 million people in Manado reside in inadequate shelter. This condition has engaged Habitat to establish an affiliate in Manado in 2003. By the end of June 2007, Habitat Manado Affiliate will accomplish a building and renovating 300 houses in Manado and Tomohon regency. “With save and build program, Habitat has already given a hope to the family that don’t have enough income to build a better house. Habitat has also motivated low income family to save their money and with the faith in God, their wish comes true”, said Mr. Roy Kaligis a community leader and entrepreneur in Kawangkoan, Manado.
The accomplishment of Habitat Manado Affiliate can not be separated from a full support by the community. A local culture called “Mapalus” is a community self help or mutual cooperation by the community. When the officers engaged in the community in building or repairing their houses, the community hand in hand accepted and prepared themselves to help the house for completion.
Habitat Manado Affiliate to build and repair 80% at Tomohon regency and 20% at Manado. 70% of the reconstruction in Manado is a new house whereas 30% of it is for renovation. “If Habitat Program doesn’t exist, until now I still live in a shack”, said Mrs. Neli Ponang one of Home Partner in SG Dua Matuari.
Habitat Manado Affiliate will target to build and repair 500 houses in 2008.
